Split, city, port and center of central Dalmatia, the main cultural, urban, traffic and tourist center. It is 1700 years old. The Roman Emperor Diocletian ruled the world from Split and left his heritage here, nowadays, belonging to the most important cultural and historic monuments. Diocletian’s Palace is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Split is the commercial, administrative and cultural center of central Dalmatia. The city has shipbuilding, plastic, cement, food industries and the like. The inhabitants of the surrounding places grow fruit and vegetables. The city is the central point of the boat and ferry lines with other ports on the coast as well as on the islands. From Split there are ferry lines to all central Dalmatian islands, as well as to Ancona in Italy. There are also ferry lines to Pula, Venice, Dubrovnik and Greece. The airport lies in the place of Resnik in the immediate vicinity.
Split can boast of having a splendid tourist offer, including various types of accommodation in hotels, apartments and rooms, as well as gastronomic offer consisting of numerous restaurants and konobas that serve first class local specialties. There are numerous beaches and swimming areas in the city and its surroundings. The most popular beach is Bacvice, a sandy beach almost in the center of Split.
Cultural and entertainment life is particularly attractive in the summer season when the squares, streets and shops are crowded with people. Split Summer Festival takes place from mid-July to mid-August, when dramas, operas and concerts are performed. Being a sports metropolis, Split offers almost all land and water sports, including soccer, basketball, tennis, mountain climbing, archery, fishing, water skiing and rowing. Three basketball players from this city played in America’s NBA basketball league.
